When to See the Great Migration in Kenya

The full year-round calendar — from calving season on the Serengeti plains to the dramatic Mara River crossings — so you can plan your visit to the right place at the right time.

The Great Migration is a year-round event. Between January and March, 500,000 calves are born on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti. April and May bring the long rains, and the herds push north through the western corridor. By July they reach the Maasai Mara. The river crossings — the moment most guests come to witness — happen between July and October, peaking in August and September when the Mara River is fullest. By November they turn south again.

What to Pack for a Maasai Mara Safari

Neutral colours (khaki, olive, tan) are essential — bright colours spook wildlife and attract biting insects. Pack layers: mornings in the Mara can be 12°C, afternoons 30°C. A wide-brimmed hat, quality sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, and a headtorch are non-negotiable. For photography, a 100–400mm lens is ideal. Leave the heavy perfume at home — scent carries on the savanna breeze.

Understanding Maasai Culture Before Your Visit

A respectful introduction to Maasai traditions, greetings, and customs so your cultural visit is a genuine exchange, not an awkward tourist exercise.

The Maasai greet with "Supa" (to a man) or "Supai" (to a woman). Respond with "Ipa". It is respectful to accept an elder's blessing — lean forward slightly when offered. Ask before photographing anyone. The enkiama (homestead) is a family space, not a stage set. Our guides are Maasai themselves and will help you navigate every interaction with respect on both sides.

Balloons launch at first light — which means a 4:30 am pick-up from camp. The flight lasts approximately one hour, drifting over the plains at heights from treetop level up to 300 m. You land wherever the wind takes you, and a champagne breakfast is served in the bush. Dress warmly — it is cold at altitude, whatever the ground temperature. Children under 7 are generally not permitted for safety reasons.
